I wish I could come up for this thing, even though I didn't like the first book in the series. But sometimes hearing from the author puts a new perspective on the source material. Crap, normally I'd have been able to drive up for a day to attend something like this. I hate how my life mostly sucks right now! :(

The event with Harris is $20.00. I will be there selling books so I won't need to pay.(one of my few perks) The full conference costs over $300.00 for five days, people treat it as a mini vacation, and a creative shot in the arm for their writing.

Off the record I'm not sure how helpful any writing workshop is toward getting writers published. But it can be very useful for beginning writers wanting to know how publishing works. In the store I was talking to one of faculty members and she shared her own frustration with me about the fate of publishing and the changes that electronic and digital books are going to pose for any author wanting to be compensated for his or her work. She felt like the information she was imparting at the conference was obsolete and not helpful for coping with how the publishing industry is changing. It was a very depressing conversation.

Much of the conference is about ways to improve writing, and isn't just focused on making-the-sale tactics. There is one workshops I want to sneak into--hope I can. The faculty list this year is heavily weighed toward mystery writers--which is a new focus. The conference name change is indicative of major new directions and I think it will be a better conference for it.
