Icons for each episode will follow. Some episodes will only have a few icons other episodes will have many. It depends upon the kind of screencaps that are availble. I am using Gateworld as the source for most of the icons made here, eventually I hope to find other sources.

Not figuring out all the HTML

Date: 2009-09-14 03:54 pm (UTC)

Well I gave up last night after a ten hours straight of trying to link my icons via a table from my Scrapbook. So I just loaded the whole gallery via the scrapbook command and posted it. Which took the whole post into HTML land--I had no idea what kind of tags to use or a clue how to get the Lj cuts to work. Because they are specific to Lj I couldn't test them on my HTML dummy try-out page.

I did finally get my banner uploaded last night, that only took four hours of the ten hour marathon. The Lj directions about how to do that were not good. It took me about 15 attempts to finally get it right. The banner is about 1% too small, but I thought that was going to be the case, I can live with the borders not quite matching up. I still need to do some tweaking but for the moment it will do.

I have the 'Hide and Seek' icons almost finished, then I can work on the 'bug week' icons. I'm slowly catching up.

Are these all the icons you want to put in the comm? I will work on putting together a post for you. I found this icon table generator, that I will use, or if you want to try to use it, let me know. Otherwise I will try to do it later this afternoon for you.

Thanks for the Link

I was using something similar and getting links to links instead of icons. I didn't know what stage of the process I was screwing up. I use Photobucket for my banner links, but I wanted to link to my icons on Lj. It seemed like it should have worked--but no.

I understand HTML in theory, but the practical application of it is where I'm failing miserably. I was having trouble with it on the Rich Text side (still am) so going to an all HTML posting is over-loading my brain. I don't want to blow-out other people's flists by not using Lj-cuts. So I thank you so much for all your help. I will try out the new icon table generator. I'v got more icons in the hopper for Hide and Seek' and want to make insect icons for 'bug week' These icons are my learning photoshop exercises. Which is actually a fun way to lean the program--though very frustrating. Thanks again

No worries. Let me know if you have any problems with it and I will see if I can get it to work for you :)

The icons turned out very nice, I think; I especially liked the ones that you created the decorative borders on. The masthead turned out very nice... don't be too discouraged if you discover that it JUST DOESN'T WANNA let you add that 1 extra pixel on the sides... occasionally monitors are like that.

I know this is a wierd thing to grasp, dyslexic or otherwise, but.. your monitor is like a piece of graph paper with leetle teeny squares... some 65,300 of 'em, to be precise.. and ya can't make something fit half the square...

In any case, in all probability, you'll have to take people to the site and point it out a couple-three times before they even see it, and it doesn't detract from it in the least... :-D

Re tables... they're a little tricky, but likely doable.. did you close the table tag?

Thanks, so much Ms. Cat. I like doing the borders and I haven't seen many people designing icons like that. The SGA set designs are very geometric and lend themselves to looking really cool in architectural icons. The trick is simplifying the backgrounds so that the architecture really pops. I will be making more as I find screencaps that are suited for that. If you find any cool bug illos that can be iconized let me know-mainly looking for scorpions, crabs and ticks.

My, you were a busy little bee when you got going. (Still need more Carson..lol). Think I like Joe against the sky or framed in red more than green or yellow. The yellow seems to make his skin look sallow. Liked the Rodney ones against the green. All in all you did a great job.

Icons Keep Rolling Along

Some of these have been done awhile, I just couldn't figure out how to post them in an icon table behind cuts. I worked very late last night trying to solve it and gave up. I didn't have to be at work until the afternoon, so I caught up on my sleep this morning.

Good screencaps for Carson Elizabeth Rodney and Aiden are not easy to find. I'm using Gateworld as my main photosource, the screencaps need to be over processed to get the definition I want and I just don't know enough about the upper tier of photoshop fixes to compensate.

I really like Sheppard against yellow backgrounds--What can I say it's my favorite color. If you will note-- your icon above-- you look fantastic in your delicate yellow shirt being hugged by Mr. Flanigan. He goes very well with yellow don't you think? I rest my case.

I'm convinced he's an autumn in the clothing color-range, so that's what I mostly use in my color backgrounds with him. All the autumnal colors look great on him as do the neutrals. The costume designers are also dressing him that way. When I put him against a blue, it's usually a smoke blue.

Rodney is difficult, you can find twenty good Sheppard screencaps to every one of McKay even fewer of Dr Beckett. For both of them I'm saving every image I can find that interests me.

My favorite photos are the quiet contemplative ones that don't really work well for icons. I will post two of them when I get home to show what I mean. They aren't the best pictures but I like the moods they project.

Beautiful icons! Of course, you had a few beautiful subjects to work with. Hee!

I really love your banner at the top of your LJ. Great job with all of that. And, like you, I really like yellow too. You can never go wrong with yellow, is my thinking. :)

You actually influenced my subject matter, when you said my banner at DW reminded you of mythic Florida. So I decided to go with that motif for this banner too. The artist is Martin Johnson Heade. This is my favorite Florida painting by him

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Johnson_Heade

I took the digital copy from Wikimedia, which is a great image resource. It was fun to make, posting it was very frustrating, the HTML directions were unclear so it took me many many tries to get it right.

Um, you can use this:

http://www.bearblue.com/journalstuff/ljcheatsheet.htm

to learn the basics of livejournal usage. I had to use it when I learned how to do LJ cuts. Pretty good icons.

Thanks for the link. My problem with the HTML commands is that the cheat sheets don't explain how to use the commands. Which is where I mess up. I'm a visual learner and descriptions tend to confuse me. So I keep struggling until I get frustrated and then say the hell with it and post things the stupid way. Eventually I will figure it all out, but it's bound to take awhile. I don't really like computers, which is why it has taken me so long to get around to learning Photoshop.

Thanks for your comment about the icons. I'm a novice at Photoshop and I am using SGA icons as my learn Photoshop project. I am enjoying the challenge. With each episode I take on a new level of Photoshop so the icons should change (for the better I hope ?) as I learn more of the program.

It should come out like this:

To go an lj cut, I would so a post like this:

blah blah

It wouldn't show up when you preview the entry or when you view just the entry but if you view our journal, you can see the cut.

Or if you want a version without text, you would use:

If I wanted to cross out or
center
or underline or bold or italicize, you use those commands.

If I want to make it or if I want to use a , I would use these commands. I could even

let say, I wanna paste icons in a row, I would do this:
Image Image Image

o_O I think that's all there is to it~

I apologize for not answering your post sooner. It was very helpful. I am severely dyslexic and have problems differentiating symbols, which has been my major problem with figuring out HTML. I am unable to follow most templates, because of the substitution problems. When I write, naturally, just to make it easier for me I don't use any punctuation, before I post anything I laboriously put all the punctuation in so everyone else can read my writing, but it means I am a very slow writer and reader.

It was making learning HTML almost impossible because I couldn't differentiate between regular punctuation and HTML symbols. What I did last week was sit down with your entry and Momcats help and color coded all the HTML commands in Photshop as pictures rather than confusing strings of unreadable punctuation symbols and I can now actually see the codes and their effects side by side.

For me dyslexia has been a life long information processing problem. Your post was very helpful. thank you.

Your Icons are very beautiful, by the way, you have a unique style.
