Thanks for all the help. The two Icons with the graphics within them were the hardest to make. I wanted Peter's icon to have the Atlantis schematic behind him like a halo, going completely around his head. I still think it is possible to do, its just complicated and requires a skill with masking I haven't quite figured out. Since the background is a gradation I would need to replicate that and then layer the images. I would have needed to build a complete Atlantis schematic and then paste Peter on top of it--difficult. There are probably simpler ways to do it, I just don't know them. I wanted the image to be symmetrical, and I liked the symbolism.
I also had fun with the Rodney in front of the stained glass. I had to process the stained glass and then Rodney in different screencaps, and then combine the two images to get the effect I wanted. I wish I was better at producing the tonal qualities I want in the images, but my training wheel version of Photoshop is limited in what it can do. ------- The restaurant we are going to tomorrow got a major write up in the Scene Magazine today, so it's going to be difficult getting a rez. We don't have Vala to anchor the table because she is in Orlando. So we might have a wait awhile to be seated, I thought I'd give you warning on that. I hope their Guac is good, the write-up in the paper said the food was fantastic.
I had seen these a while ago, but only now am getting to the appropriate post of fan-worship :) these are really sophisticated and I understand MOMCAT's praise of your work- from where I sit they are getting better and better in a rapid fashion. MMmm-- I know there are icon fest awards because DancesWithGary has several awards for multiple years- do you ever think of getting public recognition for the icon work? Let me know, and I can nose around for the nominating process. I am, myself, taking John and Rodney, 103, and John profile, 103, with many thanks from this post.
Thanks for the egoboo, that's a fanword you don't hear anymore. I was on Fanlore yesterday going through their list of fan terms, to track how some of the word meanings have changed. I also found a very interesting article about early fandom. It was fun reading because it wasn't a historic tracking of all the zines (we know that already) but rather a tracking of all the subtle cultural changes. It explained some of my (mild)frustrations with modern attitudes toward warnings, spoilers, and immediate gratification that permeates contemporary fandom.
I have only been using photoshop for about three months, so I'm not really ready for prime time if you know what I mean. I did not know there were awards for icons. You told me several months ago that there were icon sites but I've not looked for them. I've been too busy since early August to do any extensive exploring of SGA fandom. You read so much faster than I do, please let me know if you find any cool stuff.
I want to post some stories eventually and some artwork. I just can't figure out when I will find the time to do it all. Icons are good because they are short term projects. I've written a few drabbles, and want to write lots of mini-essays.
I plan to produce icons for the entire first season of shows along with the SGA rewind community, after that I don't know if I will continue to make icons for other seasons. This is a project to learn photoshop. I have always loved logo design and icon design is similar. I wish I could create my own screencaps and I wish I had access to hi-def images. But since my goal is learning the program and experimenting with creative icon solutions hi-def is not so important.
If you have any special icon needs let me know. Remember that story I told you about several months ago, the one were you said "You're not going to really write that are you?" Well, it is slowly coming along, so yes I am writing it and guess what--you get to edit it. Whether or not it ever gets posted will depend upon your sterling judgment. What can I say except it's 'Gitch' to the max, which probably means not publishable, but it's still been a rip to write. LOL.
